New! Using HIBC Standards with RFID: An Implementation Guideline

HIBCC has prepared a guideline for the usage of RFID technology with the framework of the HIBC Supplier Labeling Standard (SLS). The solution is designed to meet the general requirements for product tagging and for marking logistical units such as reusable containers or transport units in instances where barcoding or 2-dimensional symbologies do not adequately satisfy a company’s requirement. The HIBCC approach for coding RFID tags leverages existing ratified standards under ISO. Any HIBCC labeler can use this guideline for coding RFID tags without incurring additional fees for a company or item identification, while still conforming to international standards.

RFID In Healthcare: Benefits, Limitations & Recommendations

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is one of the most widely discussed healthcare technology issues of the day. While the trade literature and RFID advocates emphasize its promise of improving patient safety and efficiency, others express concern about whether the technology can be cost beneficial in light of proven and less expensive alternatives such as bar-coding.

Considering this new technology thus raises a number of questions: What are the true benefits that RFID can offer healthcare? What are its limitations? What industry standards exist for RFID, and do they matter? Although finding practical answers to questions such as these can be difficult, doing so is essential prior to making significant investments.

International Automotive Association Rejects EPC as RFID Solution

The Joint Automotive Industry (JAI), a collaborative initiative within the global automotive industry whose members include Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG), Japan Automotive Manufacturers Association (JAMA), Japan Auto Parts Industries Association (JAPIA), Odette International Limited, and Standards for Technology in Automotive Retail (STAR), has issued a global announcement rejecting the ePC standard for the automotive industry.

Odette further went on to say: "We are collectively not prepared to recommend the usage of ePC or give any endorsement to it and will always work towards open standards."

Like HIBCC, the Automotive Industry's standards are based upon alphanumeric data and open standard symbologies to maximize traceability and minimize scanning errors.

Wall Street Journal Reports: Wal-Mart's RFID Program is "Fizzling"

A recent article by the Wall Street Journal reports that Wal-Mart's push for RFID is showing signs of "fizzling."

Responding to the report, Robert A. Hankin, President of HIBCC stated, "Although unfortunate, these findings are not surprising. Wal-Mart's experience is consistent with the concerns HIBCC has expressed, most recently in our 2006 advisory to our industry. While RFID may prove highly practical for certain applications, it should not be viewed as a generic replacement for current technology. These findings further underscore the point that RFID is not a driver for healthcare to adopt the retail model."
