Supplier Labeling Standard

Primary Product Identification Data Structure Formatter

Terms Used:

Labeler Identification Code:   Assigned by HIBCC.  Identifies the labeler.  Begins with a letter, followed by 3 Alphanumeric characters.
Product / Catalogue Number: Assigned by the labeler.  Identifies the item/drug/device. 1-13 alphanumeric characters
Unit of Measure Assigned by the labeler.  Identifies the packaging configuration level of the item; e.g. Unit-Dose, Carton, Case, Master-Case, Pallet, etc.  1 numeric character.
Modulus 43 Check Character: Calculated according the the standard Modulus 43 check character formula.
Includes all characters to the left starting with the HIBC flag character - 'plus sign'.
The asterisk character is NOT included in the bar code data and is not included in the Mod 43 calculation.

Check Character Values may be

  • A through Z;  ASCII(65) - ASCII(90)
  • 0 through 9;  ASCII(48) - ASCII(57)
  • " -  " (hyphen or dash) - ASCII(45)
  • " . "  (period or dot)- ASCII(46)
  • "  "   (space)- ASCII(32)
  • "$"   (dollar)- ASCII(36)
  • " / "  (forward slash)- ASCII(47)
  • " + " (plus)- ASCII(43)
  • " % " (percent)- ASCII(37)
Bar Code Data: All the characters carried by a bar code symbol.

( Bar Code Caption ):
The human readable interpretation (caption) of the bar code data.  
The caption should begin and end with the asterisk characters ' * '.
The asterisk character must not be included in the Bar Code Data.

When ASCII 32 (SPACE) is the Check Character, an underscore character ( _ ) should be used to signify it in the Bar Code Caption.

UPN Identifier: The UPN product identification data properly formatted for use with application and or database software.
