E-Business Standards
Customized Standards for Enhanced Efficiency
Certainly no industry will benefit more from electronic commerce than health care. Each year the medical marketplace becomes more complex, as hundreds of thousands of products are shipped through layers of distribution networks to millions of locations worldwide. This volume of activity creates billions of dollars in transactions, each requiring an elaborate sales and contract administration process. Without computers we would have "paper gridlock."
The challenge is equally daunting for the buyers of these products and services. increasingly, purchasers have banded together in large but overlapping groups to negotiate for "bundles" of disparate products. This "group purchasing" process adds an additional level to the reporting burden, as information must be in numerous hands simultaneously.
HIBCC's E-Business Technical Committee, which meets four times per year, develops each transaction set based on input from throughout the industry, following industry review and approval processes consistent with the ANSI requirements. Once approved, HIBCC publishes and maintains the formats.
